An opinion of the world around me

Happy Happy Self

Happy_catI was feeling it of late, but good that someone pointed it out. There is a kind of negative vibe I have been giving. A bit can be attributed to the novelty wearing off the school experience. But a lot can be attributed to not being intentional. Intentional, a funny but important word.

It’s very important to be clear in outlook in what you want to do. In personal life or career wise. Have something to drive you on. Since I folded up my startup, there was a sort of void that engulfed me. I spend time studying for GMAT, writing B-school essay’s, CFA, FRM etc. But all those were short term. Having finally arrived to school, I never planned what to do next.

I let myself be driven by what others were doing and let myself be herded in. As time went by, it became increasingly hard for me to admit it. And it feels nice to admit it and break the shackles. Feels fresh.

Have finally sat down and started to plan how I want to spend my next 1.5 years at school. Whatever it might be, I have promised myself it will be intentional and something that makes me happy happy.

Mind Games

leave a comment »

I met a friend of mine today after a very long time. However we hit it off like yesterday. Now this friend is a person with extraordinarily high IQ. He is a genius but like with all of them he has a problem. He tends to micro analyse things.

He don’t know when to let go of things. He will keep thinking about incidents in his life from a factual perspective. You can’t find a fault in his analysis per say. But what he fails to understand is, we don’t need to do it always. If we have a quarrel with our brother, we should hug it off the next day. But his brain works differently. He will analyse the quarrel to find the root cause and in turn will never talk to his brother.

If you talk to him, you will be mighty impressed by his reasonings. They are theoretical and hence very difficult to be punctured. He will let himself suffer because his brain tells him he is right.

Such mindgames that he plays with himself, hurts no one but him. I hope with time he realizes that being happy is more important than the concept of right or wrong. Hope he loses with himself in these games of mind.

Necessties v/s Luxuries

with 2 comments

Recently I received a forwarded email. Author put forward the popular view about Necessities v/s wasteful Luxuries. I didn’t agree with him. Below are the excerpts followed by my reply.

Original Post

  1. Author was habitual buyer of wasteful luxuries items. He owned an iPod unused for 6 months; a Handy Cam unused for 2 years; a DVD player unused for last 1 month.
  2. He said that people are not happy with what they have. They always strive for bigger car, house, TV, laptop etc. He questions if these things are actually required.
  3. I have a LCD TV and a smart phone. “My old man was happier with just a BPL TV and a modest cell phone”, he said.
  4. If we strive for things that make life easier rather than so called luxuries, we will be happier.
  5. “Our predecessors treated Necessities as Luxuries; we are looking at Luxuries as Necessities”, he concluded.

My Reply

  1. The reason of not using a lot of old things is that we get bored after certain time. Simple.
  2. Need is a subjective term. Helicopter might be necessity for Narendra Modi but is a luxury for layman like me.
  3. Lets stretch authors argument a little. Why even a modest phone when we can post a letter? Why even a BPL TV when we can have newspapers, magazines and kathputali shows?
  4. Today I check email on my smart phone, do video conference, relish 3D TV. It’s called technological advancement.
  5. Our predecessors had a set of Luxuries and so do we. Flight travel, a luxury earlier is a necessity today. My Dad avoids it still. Does it make me any wrong or him any right?

Happily Ever After!

with 2 comments

One upon a time there lived a princess in a place which looked just like heaven. She used to be always sad. World and even God has been mean to her. She used to roam around the lanes of that place of all luxury; still nothing was enough to make her cheer.

One day, a Prince came into her life. He was handsome and charming. But she kept pushing him away, wary of what may happen. The more she pushed him away, the more he was pulled towards her. He kept on persisting, till heavens broke loose. Finally the Princess relented but still there was a hitch.

Her coldness drove him mad. One fine day Prince decided to go to a land far-far away. Far enough from the warmth of her breath; far enough from the comfort of her touch; far enough from the pain of her disinterest. No sooner the Prince left, than the Princess felt weak. She realized that though she has been sad before, it was the first time she really cried. That night, she dreamt of the Prince. She slept peacefully for the first time in years.

She wanted to meet the Prince badly. She ran all the way to the land far-far away. She ran through the rivers, up the hills, braved the rough weathers and treacherous jungles. She finally met him once again. She cried and cried and cried, till oceans felt shy. He held her into his arms. She felt alive again. He too gave a silent tear.

And they lived happily ever after!
